Our Winner on Franklin Adventure
Always on a quest to try the city's best burgers, Winner on Franklin was next on the list. We went early, about 6 p.m. on a Saturday, and found two seats available at the bar. With some "healthy" people practicing dry January and thinning the bar crowds, it's generally easier to get seats (and a great time to eat and drink and be anything but healthy).
The Winner Restaurants
If you've been sleeping on new restaurant openings, Winner has been blowing up in the South Brooklyn area in recent years. Starting with their original bakery location on 7th St., they've since added a butcher shop on 5th, a sandwich pop-up in Prospect Park, their other 12-seat sibling restaurant, Runner Up, and their latest edition, the more restaurant-focused Winner on Franklin.
The Food
The menu is straightforward, but everything looks delicious. Of course, I got the Smashburger, although the fish and chips were also calling my name. My wife gets the citrus salad, and we start with some cheeses. The cheese comes with slices of their amazing bread, which is worth visiting any Winner location just to get some. Seriously, as we sat at the bar, person after person came in to get whatever loaf they could get their hands on to take to dinner parties. Unfortunately for them, there wasn't much left.
One of NYC's Best Burgers?
The burger was tasty. There are others among the "city's best" that stand out more to me, but this is definitely a solid option. It was juicy without being an overly juicy or greasy mess. Made with gruyere, pickled green tomato, red onion, fried shallot, demi-glace & toban djan remoulade, it was different enough to be interesting while still tasting like a burger. The wedges were thick, crispy on the outside, and salty, just how I like them. My issue was the two together came to $30, and I think that's a bit too steep for any burger and fries except for a few exceptional cases. But as I write this a couple of weeks later, it looks like they had a reality check and adjusted the prices and taken a couple of bucks off (if the website's prices are correct).
The Verdict
By the time we finished our meal, people started flowing in, and the restaurant was filling up for the dinner rush. It's not a pilgrimage spot I'd travel from the UWS to unless your on a mission to try ever burger that lands on the "best" list, but if you are in the Crown Heights area, Winner on Franklin is a welcoming local spot you can, and should, visit again and again. I want to come back for brunch to try their egg sandwiches that also have people talking.
Verdict: Go if you're nearby
