Nowon has quietly been gaining notoriety after landing on many of the recent “Best Burger in NYC” lists, so it’s been on my list of places to try. An East Village Korean-fusion spot with a best burger? Blasphemy, you say? Well, it’s true.

Our Nowon Adventure

We had reservations for 8:30 on a prime Saturday night. We had to wait a few minutes for a table to finish up, but we were sat relatively quickly. Inside, it feels busy and energetic, with tables close together and waiters rushing by. Not a bad thing for a place like this, but don’t sit inside expecting a quiet dinner. We had a table outside in their little private pandemic huts on the street; perfect for us and if you want something more peaceful.

One of NYC's Best Burgers and Much More

Simply put, the Legendary Burger was excellent. Meat, gooey cheese, and kimchi. The kimchi adds some complexity but doesn’t overpower it. It still tastes like what you want a burger to taste like (not a Korean version of a burger). Everything else we tried was also a hit with our group. The curry tater tots were delicious until you tried the brown butter tots, which were even better. The spicy fried chicken was a winner. Chop cheese rice cakes. Yes, please. Even the green stuff was good. We had the charred broccolini, which was recommended to us. Top it all off with some Soju, and you have all the ingredients for a great night out.

Verdict: Go
