Burgers, burgers and more burgers. I know I have reviewed a lot of burgers recently. You can read about Nowon. Or Winner on Franklin. But when you are a self-proclaimed burger connoisseur living in a city with many “best burgers” and new restaurants are popping up all the time, throwing their new additions into the ring, there are always plenty of mouthwatering patties to be had.

A History of Burgers

So what's Hamburger America's claim to fame? It was opened by burger historian George Motz. That’s right—burger historian. It sounds like an amazing job. Apparently, he’s penned burger books, taught Burger 101 at universities, talked about burgers on TV, and been involved with burger films. He knows burgers.

Hamburger America is a new addition to the fast-casual category. It’s nothing fancy. It reminiscent like an old-school diner or luncheonette, with a small 11-seat burger counter up front where you can watch the cooks in action, window counters and some booths and tables in the back. You wait in line to order, and then they bring the food to you. You eat. You move on.

Eating Burgers Nom Nom Nom

I went for lunch with a friend, and it was busy, but we could find a seat. At the time, they had two different burger variations on the menu, with more “coming soon.” I chose the George Motz Fried Onion Burger with double patties and American Cheese because why not get the burger named after the burger historian. They also have a Classic Smash Burger. My Fried Onion Burger came out hot and fresh with the right amount of gooey cheese and juicy beef. No lettuce or tomato here. Was it historic? I’m not sure. Was it delicious? Yes, it was.

They have crispy shoestring fries, which are fine. The burgers are the stars. For those who don’t want beef, they have a few other classics, like a tuna sandwich, egg salad sandwich, grilled cheese, and PBJ. I didn’t try (or even see) any of these. They also have the High Life if you want a beer with your burger.

Should You Visit Hamburger America?

I’m glad I went with a friend. If I had dragged my wife (and we weren’t already in the area), she would have said, “This is it?” She likes a more extensive dining experience (and more extensive drink options), but if you want your burgers, you should try this one. Just don’t expect much else.

An interesting note: The inside decor is supposed to resemble a cheeseburger (a light brown for the bun, dark brown for the burger, and yellow highlights for the cheese). See if you notice it.

Verdict: Go if you like burgers
